ベトナム戦争はヘリ戦争でもあった

そこで1985年にヒットした Paul Hardcastle の歌が思い上がった。
今でも、よく Sportify で聞いている。

“In 1965, Vietnam seemed like just another foreign war, but it wasn’t.”
この歌詞で1965年からだと認識していましたが事実は、米国の朝鮮戦争が終わった1953年の直後の1955年からでした。

本当に平均年齢が19歳だったのか？

曲と事実は異なった。

While many soldiers were indeed very young, the actual average age of American combat troops in Vietnam was closer to 22 or 23 years old, based on casualty data and military records. The myth likely stems from the fact that 19-year-olds made up a large portion of combat deaths, which skewed public perception.
Hardcastle drew inspiration from the 1982 ABC documentary Vietnam Requiem, which included that statistic. So while the song’s claim isn’t entirely factual, it does reflect the youthfulness of many who served—and the tragic consequences they faced.

なぜ19歳というイメージを持ったかというと見た番組の大半の兵隊が19歳くらいであったからだ。

これが正式な統計である：

• Average age of U.S. military personnel killed in Vietnam: 23.1 years
• Average age of enlisted men killed: 22.37 years
• Average age of officers killed: 28.43 years

Breakdown:

• Median age: Around 20–22 years old, reflecting the large number of young draftees （中央値）
• Average age of all enlisted men (including survivors): Estimated between 23 and 24 years old （平均値）
• Average age of those killed in action (KIA): About 22.37 years  （死亡平均年齢）

Age Distribution:

• 17–19 years old: 15–20% ← これだけ19歳以下がいたと（16歳もいたらしい）
• 20–23 years old: 55–60% ← 大半がこの枠であった。
• 24–27 years old: 20–25%
• 28–34 years old: 3–5%
• Over 35 years old: 2–3%

つまり、将校を含む兵士たちで亡くなった人たち、そして生きて戻ってきた人たちの平均年齢は実際は23～24歳であり、徴集された兵士たちの平均死亡年齢が22から23歳くらいであった。

どの道、よろしくないことは確かであり、今でもアメリカはベトナム戦争の後遺症で戦っている人は少なくないのも事実である。

だが、それはその戦争においても同じだ。
日本も第二次世界大戦で苦しんでいる人たちは大勢いる。
たぶん、100年くらい経たないとダメなんだろうと。
